How to Apply for a New Speed Hump in Palo Verde Neighborhood in Tucson, AZ

Written by Jayla, PVNA Streets, Parks, Beautification Chair

1. Determine Where You Would Like to Have a Speed Hump

Start the process by going to the City of Tucson website and search for Speed Hump Request Form, or click this link:

TDTM - Speed Hump Request Form

Complete the form and submit.

2. Wait for City of Tucson to Review and Respond

City of Tucson (after some time) will reply to you via email similar to this one:

Good Afternoon Mr./Ms. Xxxxxx,

Thank you for your interest in making your neighborhood a safer place for all. I am in receipt of your request for speed humps on E. Fairmount St and N. Camilla Blvd. Attached you will find an introduction letter, a highlighted map of the area that needs to be petitioned as well as the petition form. I have also attached our policy and procedures manual for your review.

If you have any questions, please give me a call at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.

Kind Regards,

Xxxxx Xxxxxxx

The email will include a map of the area with highlighted parcel numbers.  This is the affected area of the speed humps. You will receive the Petition form, cover letter, and instructions.

3. Get Petition Signatures & Submit Form

You are required to get 60% or more of signatures from owners or renters at the property.  A location may include several apartment buildings.  Contact the apartment management and get one signature for all the units.  This will make the process easier.

Once you get more than 60% of signatures, you can submit the form for review as described in their email.  You can scan the paperwork and emailed to the City of Tucson.  Keep the originals for your records.

4. Await Approval and Then Begin Fundraising

After about a month, you may receive approval for the speed humps.  The approval may look like this:

Speed humps cost approximately $5,000.  The City of Tucson has a program to help with the expense, managed by our ward office.  The Ward is allocated 5 spots per year. You can get on a waiting list to have them installed and our ward will cover most of the cost.  They ask the person requesting the speed humps to come up with $500 per speed hump.  Submit your information to your Ward office.

You will need to raise the remaining $500.  You can discuss raising these funds with your neighbors in the affected area to donate to the fund as it makes all of us safer.

NOTE: Individuals who have done this process have found that working with the City of Tucson, and our local ward office to be an enjoyable experience.  The website is easy to navigate. The City of Tucson can be called if you have questions.  The Ward 6 Council Office team members are great, and we live in the Best Ward in Tucson, in our opinion!
